CNC machines
CNC machines
CNC is actually a computer related term and the abbreviation of CNC stands for computer numerical control. This term actually points to the computer controllers which are assigned the task of reading the g-code instructions and in turn drive the machine tool. The machine tools are basically powered mechanical tools or devices which are typically utilized for the purpose of fabricating components by the removal or appropriately selective removal of the concerned material. Computer numerical control actually directs the interpolation of a tool or a cutting tool within the work envelope or set up of the concerned machine.
The parameters regarding the working of the computer numerical tool can be altered through software mainly and by software load programs too. The predecessors of the computer numerical control were the numerically controlled machines. These machines were hard wired and the parameters of working of these machines could not be changed. The numerically controlled machines were built by John T Parsons in collaboration with the very popular institution of those times for the concerned purpose that is the MIT servomechanisms laboratory. The first computerized numerical control machine thus built was much after its predecessor that was built in the 1940’s and early 1950’s. The first computerized numerical control machine built used the numerically controlled machine’s hardware or the hardware of same type. It was after this period that the computer was used only for the purpose of calculations regarding tool compensation, and sometimes also for the purpose of editing.
The first revolutionary change was brought into the sector of computer numerical control by the introduction of computerized numerical control machines. With the introduction of these machines, the cutting of curves became as easy as cutting straight lines. The complex 3 dimensional structures were also easy to produce now. The number of steps or the machining steps that required human intervention or human action was also reduced dramatically. With the increased automation processes in the sector of the computerized numerical control machines, considerable improvements were made in the field of consistency and quality in the CNC sector.
The good thing about the CNC machines is that the quality and consistency has been improved without increasing the effort of the operator. The machines have actually reduced the error frequency in the concerned task and the operators are now having some extra time to perform other important jobs and additional tasks. The CNC automation has also resulted into the flexibility in the way in which the parts of the machines are held in the process of manufacturing. The time that was taken previously for the purpose of changing the machines and producing different elements has also been reduced.
It sometimes happens that a whole series of the computerized numerical control machines are joined to form a combined single station. In such type of cases, a single station is called as the cell. Nowadays, the CNC machines are directly controlled by the software that are made or created by the CAM software. CNC has simplified production to a great extent.
